Wood - that is our history

Change,
decisions,
generational change

More than 90 years of THEURL and no end in sight. On the contrary: the fourth generation is already waiting in the wings to actively lead the innovative family business for timber construction solutions into the future.

Pellets plant and CHP plant to be built in Assling

A sustainable cycle

Another milestone in the company’s history is reached with the construction of a state-of-the-art pellet plant and a combined heat and power plant (CHP) at the Assling site.

2024
Hall extension
at the glulam plant

Addition of a joinery hall at the glulam plant and expansion of joinery facilities

The new joinery centre has increased the efficiency of the entire project processing with the hall extension and processing systems.

2021/2022
Assling office building

Completion of the headquarters at the Assling/Tyrol site.

A vertical, continuous supporting structure consisting of glulam columns and CLTPLUS is used in the construction of the 22-metre-high new office tower in Assling.

2018-2020
Construction of CLT plant and
joinery centre

In 2019, Hannes and Stefan founded the third location and – already supported by the fourth generation – began building their own state-of-the-art CLT plant in Steinfeld and office building.

2010s
Conversion and expansion of the sawmill

The second decade of the current millennium is characterised by targeted investment in the future.

In 2011, the planing mill is converted and the round timber centre for strong and small timber is expanded. In 2014, a new sawing line is added and the headquarters are remodelled.

2006 - 2007
Construction of glulam plant and
joinery centre

The growing awareness of sustainability and resource conservation leads to a profound rethink in the industry and the establishment of the second site with a glulam plant.

2004
Installation of state-of-the-art incision technology

The existing sawmill will be demolished and replaced by a modern new building with state-of-the-art technology.

1990s
The third generation.

In the 90s of the last century, the targeted expansion of the company gradually succeeded.

Cousins Hannes and Stefan Theurl slowly join their father’s business and gain their first experiences. Between 1995 and 1999, the two cousins finally take over the management and are ready to embark on a new millennium of wood processing. At this time, the volume of timber cut is almost 100,000 cubic metres per year, around 100 times higher than in their grandfather’s day.

1982
Expansion of the product range

Building a planing mill is the first step into wood processing.

At this time, around 10,000 m³ of planed goods can be processed each year. As a further milestone, a new, spacious office building not only facilitates work in the administration, the building also serves as a prestigious company headquarters. At the end of the 1980s, the first computer systems are purchased from Olivetti: the company has successfully entered the age of automation.

1977
Thinking ahead, daring to try something new

The demand for dried quality wood, on the other hand, is growing steadily during this time.

The construction of the first heating plant with four connected drying chambers guarantees THEURL a huge advantage over its competitors thanks to faster delivery times and lower transport costs.

1969
The second generation.

The sons Hans, Konrad and Josef take over the business from their father and found the company Brüder Theurl OHG.

This step serves as the basis for all future growth. As a result, the second generation began to build the current site and sawmill from scratch just one year later, in 1970.

1956
Export to the south

Initial contacts are made with timber traders in Italy and the first supply contracts are concluded with partners on the other side of the Alps.

At that time, the horse-drawn vehicle fleet was still loaded by hand, then the timber was taken to Thal railway station, where the goods for export were unloaded again using manpower.

1950
Change to the Thaler Sonnseite

Almost 20 years after the company was founded, the first relocation to the sunny side of Thal takes place.

Peter Theurl lays an extremely solid foundation for future generations and impressively demonstrates to his sons how a willingness to take risks, chance and a little bit of luck can lead to sustainable success. Thanks to modern machines and with the help of eight employees, the previous cutting volume can be increased to 13,000 to 15,000 cubic metres per year.

The power of his imagination

1932
Peter Theurl
Company founder

Grandfather Peter Theurl proves his courage and innovative spirit in uncertain times with the purchase of the Weilerhof farm in Unterassling in East Tyrol. The purchase price of 25,350 shillings was an unimaginably high sum for the enterprising farmer’s son at the time of the global economic crisis. With the help of the Venetian saw belonging to the farm, he began to successfully produce sawn timber and construction timber for regional needs.
