Wattens primary school

Educational facility, Tyrol

The new Wattens primary school – a modern and climate-friendly learning paradise – is being built with innovative ribbed ceilings, a combination of our CLTPLUS and glulam products. The sustainable materials blend in harmoniously with the buildings on Kirchplatz and will create an inspiring environment for over 200 pupils from autumn 2025. The school, designed as a hybrid building and awarded 1st place in the GP 2023 competition by ARGE Studio Lois Architektur + ir architect Iris Reiter, combines concrete construction in the basement and solid timber construction on the upper floors. THEURL has been supplying the first solid timber products to Zimmermann & Co GmbH in Wattens since the beginning of February.

How are ribbed ceilings created?

A ribbed ceiling element measures over 20 m² and consists of two glulam ribs and one CLTPLUS ceiling element each.

In the joinery service centre, precise processing is first carried out on both solid wood products. The glulam ribs and the CLTPLUS ceiling elements are then joined together using screw press bonding. A joint-filling 2-component adhesive is used to ensure a durable and stable connection.

Solution approach

A special feature of this timber building is the more than 150 factory prefabricated ribbed ceilings made from CLTPLUS ceiling elements and glulam. These combine outstanding strength, enormous stability and high load-bearing capacity with low weight. Thanks to trained employees in the joinery service centre, as well as annual factory production control, these have been produced at THEURL as special solutions since 2024.

Result

A total of 405 m³ of glulam in visible quality will be used for this construction project, of which 236 m³ will be used for the glulam ribbed ceilings and around 170 m³ for beams and columns. In addition, over 400 m³ of CLTPLUS ceiling elements with thicknesses of 120 and 160 mm will be used. The finished ribbed ceilings are also fully bonded to the CLTPLUS surface with a weather protection film. The company’s own swap bodies are used for delivery to ensure smooth and rapid construction progress.

Double columns made of glulam

On a total of 18 double columns made of glulam, numerous and very complex processes such as rebates, slots, drill holes and recesses are carried out on the joinery machines. These are necessary for the steel components, which are assembled on site.

Two stairs made of glulam wedges and CLTPLUS

For the direct connection of the floors, two CLTPLUS stairs with attached glulam wedges are prefabricated in the factory. The result: the stairs can be easily used during the entire construction period and there is no need for temporary site stairs.
