Theatre in the Prater

Vienna

The new theatre in the Prater Park is creating a modern performance venue in Vienna that combines sophisticated architecture with innovative timber construction. The building offers space for large-scale musical and theatre productions and, due in particular to its complex geometry, places high demands on design, fabrication and assembly. THEURL is supplying around 725 m³ of CLTPLUS for the project.

A showcase for modern timber architecture

The Prater Theatre combines the functional requirements of a modern performance venue with an architecturally sophisticated design. In addition to the auditorium with its various tiers, the building features spacious public areas that offer visitors a unique spatial experience even before the performance begins.

The design places high demands on the architecture, structural engineering and building services. In theatre construction in particular, numerous functions must be integrated within a confined space, ranging from stage technology and acoustics to ventilation.

This is where the precise prefabrication of timber components plays a crucial role: THEURL produces CLTPLUS elements for the various areas of the building which are machined to exact specifications and are prepared for assembly in accordance with the project-specific requirements.

Precision work for complex geometries

A particular challenge of the project lies in the complex CNC machining of the cross-laminated timber elements. In particular, the components for the parquet and the gallery areas require the highest precision in their fabrication. Different geometries, connections and structural details must be taken into account precisely during production so that the elements can be assembled with a perfect fit on site. In addition, there are numerous ventilation holes that are machined directly into the CLTPLUS elements and precisely tailored to the planned ventilation system. This means that not only structural but also building services requirements are incorporated into the factory prefabrication process.

Thanks to state-of-the-art CNC technology and a high level of manufacturing precision, THEURL is able to meet these complex requirements with great accuracy. The result is ready-to-assemble components that minimise the need for on-site adjustments and enable the efficient realisation of this challenging theatre construction project.
