'THE EAGLE' mountain restaurant

Commercial building, Kreischberg

At almost 2,000 metres above sea level, the Kreischberg offers a picturesque panorama that invites you to arrive, linger and enjoy. Over time, the existing umbrella bar could no longer meet this requirement, so the small temporary après-ski location was finally replaced by a real landmark. Like a resting eagle, the alpine exclamation mark designed by Viereck Architekten (Graz) has been perched high above the Styrian Murtal valley since December 2020.

Lots of wood and a panoramic view

In terms of design, the architects were guided by the client's wishes and the landscape context, while the design team opted for glulam from THEURL for the choice of materials and construction.

This meant that the entire supporting structure could be prefabricated in the factory and assembled piece by piece on site. A total of 66 m³ of glulam was used in visible quality in the form of 57 joined components, whereby the many angles and the unusual roof pitch meant that there were plenty of details and connections to consider during the planning phase.

Thanks to the panoramic glazing, guests can enjoy a spectacular view of the ski slopes and the mountain range from the entire interior.

The interior offers space for up to 200 guests, as well as a bar area with a 15-metre-long counter made of backlit stone slabs and a terrace with another 180 seats. The highlight in the basement: “EAGLE IN”, a kind of “drive-in” where those in a hurry can enjoy freshly prepared sandwiches and drinks directly at the counter before heading back out onto the piste.

Solution approach

In order to minimise the construction time, the basement, half of which is buried in the ground, was constructed using precast concrete elements. A ground floor built entirely of timber is enthroned on top of this – only the service core was built using precast concrete elements.

Result

In addition to the generous glass surfaces, it is the visible glulam columns and beams that define the warm and inviting appearance of the dining area. The slender glulam columns lean inwards in two directions and are arranged in a grid of two metres.
