Residential complex for Hallein-Burgfried, phase 2
Housing construction, Salzburg
As the South Tyrolean housing estate in the Burgfried district of Hallein, built in the 1940s, could no longer meet current living standards and refurbishment proved too expensive and complicated, the municipality of Hallein decided to carry out a complete renovation in three stages. Redensification carried out in this process, based on the development concept of the Salzburg architectural firm Scheithauer, provides for 130 residential units in the same place as the previous 62 – including an underground car park and communal areas.

Solution approach
Clear orthogonal structures characterise the consistent hybrid timber construction, just as the use of materials is intended to reflect a new urbanity. The architects opted for a timber frame construction for the load-bearing exterior walls, while the load-bearing interior walls and ceilings were builting using plywood elements from THEURL.
Result
While cs architects had specified the external dimensions of the ceilings, THEURL’s joinery team ensured that the individual panels were cut as waste-optimised as possible. Electrical installations, milling and outlets for installations were coordinated with the respective trades and also incorporated by THEURL.
