KLE-SCH climbing and shooting centre

Commercial construction, Carinthia

A “Klescher”, as the Carinthians say, is when there is a loud bang. The name KLE-SCH fits this project like a glove: the Hermagor-based team of architects Ronacher transformed a former factory site in St. Daniel im Gailtal into one of the most modern sports centres for climbing and shooting sports in Austria.

Sports centre with a feel-good atmosphere

While the elongated structures located at ground level were built using timber construction, the architects opted for reinforced concrete for the almost 20 metre high climbing tower, the bouldering hall and the multi-purpose room. The building itself is unobtrusive and close to nature: the shooting ranges are hidden underground, a band in the form of a green roof floats above the filigree timber construction, while the façade surface of the tower rising in between, including the outdoor climbing wall, is reminiscent of a majestic rock face.

Timber construction with character

The generous use of larch and spruce wood gives the functional building an inviting, warm atmosphere both inside and out and forms a successful contrast to the partially untreated surfaces.

The rooms are bright and open, with a cosy bar and lounge area and small terraces inviting people to linger. THEURL products played a key role in achieving this effect: five lorries delivered 131 glulam components and 110 CLTPLUS components in visible and industrial quality to the construction site in just eight days.
