Stockerau primary school

School construction, Lower Austria

The architects Maurer & Partner, based in Vienna, Hollabrunn and Korneuburg, were commissioned by the municipality of Stockerau to design a floating, weatherproof bridge to connect the two primary schools, Stockerau East and Stockerau West, located opposite each other. The areas of the existing buildings were also extended with a lightweight construction additional storey using state-of-the-art technology, and a new gymnasium. The designers focussed on an ecological construction method using timber as the building material.

Meaningful architecture and a positive learning environment

In this context, THEURL was able to deliver 15 lorry loads with a total of 699 individual components, of which only 63 elements were ordered in industrial quality. The interior walls, on the other hand, were installed in visible quality on both sides. The construction elements made of plywood were largely left unclad and their material quality is reflected in the building as natural wooden surfaces, ensuring an animating learning environment and a healthy indoor climate.

The refurbishment itself took place while the school was still in use

The ground-up renovation also includes thermal optimisation as well as the replacement of all windows and a complete overhaul of the electrics.

Other benefits of connecting the two existing school buildings in Stockerau include the installation of a lift, which provides barrier-free access to all floors, and the extension of the outdoor area to include a 60-metre long Tartan track with a long jump facility.
