Hirben Naturlaub Hotel

Hotel construction, South Tyrol

At the Hirben Naturlaub Hotel in South Tyrol, you can be superstitious – indeed, the eco-friendly wooden building built in 2016 literally invites you to knock on wood. The hosts, the Stoll family, see their building not only as a place to live, but above all as an oasis of well-being and, in line with their own philosophy, opted to use 100 per cent solid wood from the region when extending the existing building.

Project information

Use: Nature and organic hotel South Tyrol
Location: Alta Pusteria/South Tyrol
Completion date: 2022
Theurl products used: 35 m³ glulam, 700 m³ CLTPLUS
Location: Alta Pusteria/South Tyrol

Made of 100 per cent wood

During the planning phase, Dominik Rieder from Brixen-based Baukraft Architektur decided in favour of local larch for the façade. Regional spruce wood was used for the house structure, with the walls left visible. For the furnishings, architect Ambra Piccin favoured old-growth spruce, while plastics were largely avoided.

Solution approach

The fact that the Hirben can call itself one of the few wooden hotels in the region is also thanks to Erhard Stoll, THEURL’s log buyer in the South Tyrol market area. All of the natural material comes directly from the Puster Valley, meaning that hardly any transport distances were involved. THEURL supplied 35 m³ of glulam and 700 m³ of CLTPLUS for the project – both in industrial quality.

Result

Five-layer elements were used for the walls and seven-layer panels for the ceilings. Thanks to precise planning, the construction time on site for the carpenter was just 17 working days, including, of course, the odd admiring view of the surrounding Dolomites.

"Wood is honest,
genuine and casual.

The product is great, exactly what we need in our sustainably built house. A beautiful piece of nature for indoors. A beery thing, through and through."
