The Vivea 4* Hotel in Bad Bleiberg has undergone a general refurbishment. A generous extension was realised with CLTPLUS in a short space of time. Hotel refurbishments are always complex and planning-intensive projects. Here in particular, the timing and duration of the renovation play a decisive role. Smooth coordination and as few interfaces as possible between all parties involved are particularly important in this segment.

Planners and contractors had to reconcile a number of issues in this project.

Fire protection imposed strict requirements on the timber construction, while the large spans of the glulam beams made for a challenging structural design. Together with the large-format ceiling elements made of CLTPLUS, they create a ribbed ceiling construction. THEURL supplied prefabricated wall and ceiling elements made of CLTPLUS for the new therapy centre and indoor pool.

The challenge

The particular challenge in this project was to perfectly harmonise and connect the old and new buildings. The precise CLTPLUS elements, prefabricated to the millimetre, were the ideal building material for this construction task, as they enabled a perfect and seamless connection to the existing building. Some of the new elements could thus be easily “pushed” into the existing building.

Customised to the millimetre

The special, curved shape of the indoor pool area also posed no problems for the material or the designers. As the CLTPLUS elements can be bound in almost any shape, the semi-circular shape of the indoor pool posed no problem from a structural point of view. In total, our partner Holzbau Lindner used 175 m³ of glulam and 680 m³ of CLTPLUS in the project.

Team player wood

The interaction with other materials, in this case some concrete and steel elements, is also no challenge for CLTPLUS.

Instead, the different building materials complement each other perfectly depending on their properties. When it comes to timber components, hardly any two elements are the same. In modern joinery, however, this is not a problem at all.

Highlight for recovery

The remodelling and general refurbishment of the entire complex, including the timber extension, was completed within six months.

309 beds are now available to guests at the 4-star health hotel. The indoor pool area is a special highlight thanks to its wooden construction and now offers a pleasant, natural atmosphere that allows guests to relax thanks to the many exposed wooden surfaces.
