Working in a lively showroom

The steady growth of the industrial company over the past few years had made the new building necessary.

Instead of a simple functional building, THEURL seized the opportunity to design a “living showroom”. The brief: to create a compact yet spacious place to work that encourages people to think ahead and exchange ideas on equal terms. An architecturally sophisticated building that emphasises the aesthetic and structural advantages of wood as a building material.

The solution: an extension to the existing office building that stretches over 22 metres in height and offers space for 70 new workstations on 1,510 square metres of office space.

The basement was designed as an underground car park in concrete construction and forms the foundation for the four-storey supporting structure of the office levels, which were realised as pure timber construction throughout. Stairwell and lift shaft included.

Modern ways of thinking and acting require an appropriate environment. The interior design therefore focusses on an innovative office concept including contemporary furnishings and state-of-the-art technical equipment. The virtual absence of load-bearing interior walls allows for maximum flexibility in the layout and use of space.

While the ground floor houses representative public areas such as the sales department and meeting rooms, the first floor accommodates the HR department, a communal room and a roof terrace. The second floor comprises meeting rooms and the management offices.

Lightweight and transparent

Overall, the architectural language of the building is inviting and open, with the mullion-transom add-on façade for the glazing and thermal building envelope made of wood acting as an eye-catcher.

Inside and out, the natural material dominates in iridescent variations: from the horizontal balcony bands with larch floors to the sun protection slats in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass façade, the natural spruce wood and the style-defining glulam slats in silver.

The vertical load transfer takes place via CLT walls in conjunction with free-standing, exposed glulam columns that can withstand a ninety-minute fire exposure.

The building is also earthquake-proof thanks to the sophisticated shear force transfer through the interlocking of the component joints. The successful realisation of the entire building in its high technical quality was only possible due to the degree of precision in the joinery and cutting of the individual components.
