Lots of wood for children's laughter

In Graz, a children’s daycare centre in modular timber construction has been built in just a few weeks. Nine room modules now offer plenty of opportunities to run around, play, do handicrafts and cuddle up. In spring 2021, THEURL produced solid timber construction elements for a company daycare centre consisting of several prefabricated room modules for XAL, a manufacturer of luminaires and lighting systems in Graz.

What characterises modular construction

The young company also has a young workforce. However, many employees are faced with the great challenge of balancing family and professional responsibilities. The issue of childcare for young children in particular has proved difficult in the past. As an employer, XAL has therefore decided to tackle this problem and set up a company childcare centre.

The architects developed a design consisting of several connected timber room modules. THEURL’s experienced team of timber construction technicians then processed the plans so that the CNC joinery systems could produce the elements automatically. From the outside, the individual modules can only be guessed at; the continuous, rear-ventilated façades give the impression of a larger unit. They are made of thermal spruce in a vertical 3D design.

Change, decision, generation change

The strengths of modular timber construction were put to full use in this project. Theurl supplied the CLTPLUS and the glulam to the timber construction company carrying out the work. The room modules were prefabricated in its factory – dry and on schedule. This ensured high quality and precise calculation of the construction costs. While all the structural preparations were being made on the construction site, the modules were already fully insulated in the factory and were delivered to the construction site complete with façade tensioning membrane, windows and doors.
